Your Opportunity to Join Mentorship and Career-Consultation Programs

‘We encourage you to sign up (as mentor or mentee) and share information with your trainees and colleagues’

The Mentorship Subcommittee was created in the summer of 2022 in response to a proposal made by education committee leaders to evaluate, coordinate, and grow Academy mentorship initiatives.

Housed under the Membership Committee, the Mentorship Subcommittee includes members who represent the Medical Student Education, Residency Education, Fellowship Education, Early Career Psychiatry and DEI Subcommittees and works closely with all of these groups to grow mentorship efforts.

The subcommittee hopes to coordinate multiple Academy mentorship opportunities under a single umbrella. One eventual goal is to create a range of mentorship opportunities for Academy members, to allow all members to serve as both mentees and mentors in various domains, including training, career planning, research/scholarship, and administration.

Currently, the subcommittee coordinates a number of mentorship activities. Our annual Trainee and Early Career Psychiatrist (ECP) Mentorship Program pairs nearly 100 trainees and early career psychiatrists with individual mentors for the year, matched by interest and identity characteristics, with the goal of fostering interest and growth in our field.

The subcommittee sponsors a series of mentorship-themed webinars offered in collaboration with other committees and SIGs, with topics ranging from submitting successful abstract proposals to the annual meeting to preparing to apply for C-L Psychiatry Fellowship.

Our newest offering is a Career-Consultation program for mid-career faculty five to 20 years out from training, which matches interested faculty with a mentor for a one-time, virtual consultation to help them think through a specific question or problem.

We are also working closely with the Research Committee as they launch the inaugural Developing Scholars Research Colloquium, helping them to identify potential mentors in research and scholarship, which will be a key element of that initiative.

We encourage you to sign up for these programs (as mentor or mentee) and share information about them with your trainees and colleagues. Please also don’t hesitate to reach out to the mentorship subcommittee chair, Carrie Ernst, MD, (carrie.ernst@mssm.edu) if you have ideas for new ACLP mentorship initiatives.
