The finding:
This is an editorial on the state of mentorship in C-L psychiatry, and particularly relevant to this community, the state of mentorship within the Academy of C-L Psychiatry (ACLP). This piece reflects on the importance of mentorship across career stages and provides clear information on the avenues ACLP provides members for mentorship, ranging from medical students to advanced-career faculty.
Strength and weaknesses:
The editorial provides a quick background on the utility of mentorship, with a focus on learners (medical students, residents, fellows) and academic faculty (early, mid, and advanced career), while acknowledging the state of mentorship in nonacademic settings is likely significantly more dire. The article establishes common needs of mentees and valuable contributions from mentors at various career stages. The article may have benefit from additional exploration on the interplay between ACLP mentorship programs and other mentorship programs (e.g. American Psychiatric Association, your current institution), as well as the various conflicts (e.g. financial, time-related) that impede both fostering and maintaining meaningful mentor-mentee relationships.
Relevance:
Regardless of career stage, this article may provide C-L psychiatrist a framework for considering what mentorship may offer. This is also an excellent reminder of the incredible infrastructure that has been created within ACLP to provide a variety of potential options for mentorship.
