Consultation-liaison psychiatrists with strong clinical expertise contribute significantly to patient care and clinical program development, but many have not had opportunities to acquire strong research skills. To advance the field of C-L Psychiatry, the ACLP Research Subcommittee presents a full day colloquium for C-L psychiatrists interested in engaging in research or other evidenced-based scholarly work as part of their careers, whether on a modest scale or with the intent of becoming independent investigators.
The colloquium aims to enlarge the cadre of C-L psychiatrists who possess the skills needed to take scientific investigations from initial ideas to completed projects. It is geared towards participants in the early stages of research career development and those who are incorporating research and scholarly work into their clinical careers. The colloquium welcomes trainees through mid-level faculty. Ideal applicants will range from those just getting started in project development to those who are developing their first proposals for external funding.
Registered participants will have the opportunity to engage in one of three tailored tracks that best fits their career goals. Leaders in the field will engage participants in keynote addresses, interactive didactic sessions and small group workshops focused on career and project development. Topics for each track will focus on career development, establishing effective mentorship, project development, and identifying resources.
Tracks
Primary Clinicians Engaged in Research and Clinical and Educational Program Developers tracks
Participants in these two tracks must register for the colloquium in advance. Each track will have interactive didactic sessions specific to their track, as well as small group workshops with mentors in the field. Participants will have the opportunity to formally present their active work and receive feedback from mentors in small group settings. Participants should express their interest in this option during registration, and up to 12 participants from each track will be selected to present. Participants are otherwise encouraged to bring project ideas and questions to share during the workshops. Attendance will be limited to 35 participants per track to promote vibrant interactions during workshops and registration will be on a first come basis. Registration for and participation in the colloquium session is at no cost.
Independent Investigator track
Participants for the Independent Investigator track will be selected through a competitive application process and will receive complimentary registration for the 2024 annual meeting. During the small group workshop portion of the program, the six applicants selected for the Independent Investigator track are expected to briefly present their original research ideas/proposals (15 mins) to two of their fellow mentees and a panel of 2 experienced mentors. This will be followed by 15 mins of interactive guidance from mentors on advancing their projects. Applicants for the Independent Investigator track may submit ideas that are at any stage of development, from novel specific aims or research objectives to fully developed proposals that have not yet been funded.

Selected applicants will receive complimentary registration for the ACLP 2024 Annual Meeting. If applicants are not selected for the Independent Investigator track, they will be offered guaranteed registration for an alternative track.
Primary Clinicians Engaged in Research and Clinical and Educational Program Developers tracks
Participation for these two tracks will be limited to the first 35 individuals to register per track and will be on a rolling basis. Participants will receive formal confirmation of registration via email from the Research Subcommittee, which will occur no later than August 15th, 2024.
Independent Investigators track
Six applicants will be selected for the Independent Investigator track. Judging will be completed by the ACLP Research Subcommittee. Applications will be scored on a rubric including:
Final selections will aim for diversity in applicants’ personal qualifications, areas of research focus, career stages, home institutions, and research career goals (independent investigator vs clinician researcher).
