Race and Racism in Academic Medicine

A personal reflection

This plenary is filtered through the lens of a professor, interim department chair, transplant psychiatrist, addiction psychiatrist, ethicist, amateur thespian, and associate dean for diversity and inclusion (DEI) since 2002.

John E. Franklin, MD, MSc, MA

John E. Franklin, MD, MSc, MA, Northwestern University, is a beloved teacher, mentor, and clinician educator at Northwestern, who has been doing the work of DEI for more than 20 years. Along with that experience he is a specialist in addiction psychiatry and transplant psychiatry. Dr Franklin will speak from his experience about the changing landscape of DEI and the challenges ahead.

Biosketch

Professor Franklin is Professor of Psychiatry, Transplant Surgery, Medical Education and Medical Humanities, and Bioethics. He is Associate Dean of Diversity, Inclusion, and Student Support at the Feinberg School of Medicine and is the current Interim Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at Northwestern University.

He holds an MD from the University of Michigan with graduate degrees from Harvard in Clinical Epidemiology, and from Northwestern in Medical Humanities and Bioethics. 

After residency at Sinai Hospital at Wayne State University, he became division chief and training director of the addiction psychiatry fellowship at Northwestern. He has been the transplant psychiatrist at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Kolver Transplant Center for 28 years.
