C-L Psychiatry Case Conference: A Case of Hypothyroidism Complicated by Catatonia

A trainee presents a case and a master consultation-liaison (C-L) clinician educator serves as a discussant for a virtual live case conference. The case presentation and facilitated discussion was followed by a question-and-answer session. The case conference provides trainees an opportunity to learn about C-L psychiatry and augment C-L education at their institutions. Viewers will learn how to succinctly present a case, observe C-L psychiatrists work through diagnostic challenges, and appreciate management dilemmas that arise in C-L psychiatry.

The presenters discuss a case of severe hypothyroidism complicated by psychosis and catatonia. The situation of a medical team not agreeing on management and the diagnosis of Hashimoto’s encephalopathy are also briefly reviewed.

Trainee presenter: Matthew Rasmussen, MD, PGY-3 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Psychiatry Residency, Lebanon, NH
Discussant: James Rustad, MD, FACLP, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, South Burlington, VT
Moderator: David Fipps, DO, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
