In our second introduction to plenary speakers at this year’s Annual Meeting…
Women are susceptible to both depression and sleep disorders during the menopause transition, driven by female-specific and menopause-related factors, as well as other risks such as stress exposures and their medical and psychiatric history.
These hormonal and menopause-related factors also contribute to mood and sleep disruption during the course of breast cancer treatment.
In her plenary presentation at this year’s Academy Annual Meeting, Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Women during Midlife and Breast Cancer Treatment: Emerging Trends and Therapeutic Strategies, Hadine Joffe, MD, MSc, will discuss the clinical features, comorbid symptoms, risk factors, and treatment approaches for mood and sleep-related symptoms.
The presentation will cover the best treatment strategies, including hormone therapy, serotonergic agents, other psychotropics, as well as behavioral interventions.
Learning objectives are to:
Dr. Joffe is Paula A. Johnson professor of Psychiatry in the field of women’s health at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and executive director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she directs the Women’s Hormones and Aging Research Program. She is also affiliated with the HMS Division of Sleep Medicine and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Department of Supportive Oncology and Breast Cancer Program.
Dr. Joffe obtained her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, master’s degree in epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health, Psychiatry residency training at McLean Hospital, and Reproductive Psychiatry fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
She is an experienced academic leader, clinician, and clinical reproductive neuroscientist whose research focuses on brain health across menopause and in breast cancer survivors. Her research examines the mechanisms (neural, hormonal, stress, autonomic), course, downstream consequences (body fat gain, anti-estrogen adherence), and treatment of neurocognitive symptoms (depression, insomnia, thermoregulatory disturbance, cognition, fatigue).
Dr. Joffe’s contributions have been recognized through the HMS William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award, HMS Department of Psychiatry Stuart T. Hauser MD PhD Mentorship Award, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Distinguished Clinician Award, and national awards (Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Fellowship, Vivian Pinn Award for Outstanding Research in Women’s Health, Thomas Clarkson Outstanding Clinical & Basic Science Research Award).
